Spooky Books to Put You in an October Mood
Reading in "season" is a way of life for me. Maybe it's how the books are released, but I always find myself leaning towards specific genres based on the weather. During winter, I find myself immersed in folklore, history, and cold places. Spring brings fairies, flowers, and romance. Summer is all about the travel books! And fall, well... bring on the magic, mystery, and thrill.
I've listed out the books I'm reading and recommend for this October. Nothing better than an excellent book to get you in the autumn mood!

My Recommendations:
A hot book for this year and I fell hard. Promoted as a "Handmaid's Tale" meets the Salem witch trials, I thought this book had its own voice. Different from the typical good vs evil - The Year of the Witching has no clear cut hero. The main character was fascinating to follow, and the read was filled with danger, curses, witchcraft, and misogyny. However, it was also filled with courage, friendship, love, and female strength. Highly recommend adding this to your October list.
The first book in a series, this one has been around for a while. I actually just found out about it this year and thought I'd give it a try. I read the initial "don't read this book before bed" warning as a joke and then almost immediately realized it was a valid point! Set in a Great Gatsby atmosphere with evil demons and young people with unique abilities, this book is spooky to the max.
I had to add this one. If you loved Twilight (even if you loved it and then matured on from it, like me), you almost have to read the Edward POV. And what's more Halloween than lovesick vampires?
On My TBR (to be read):
The September OwlCrate book - the cover already has me swooning. I haven't read the reviews on this one yet, I just know it takes place in Maine in an old house and is CREEPY. Yes, please.
The August Once Upon a Book Club book, this read promises mystery, suspense, and personal enlightenment. From the description: A family finds a baby girl outside their manor house and decides to try and keep her. If you're interested in joining Once Upon a Book Club, click here! Looking forward to this one the most as I love VE Schwab. It also starts in 1714 France and centers around a girl who makes a deal with the devil to live forever, but can never be remembered.
The prequel to the Pillars of the Earth, this book takes place in the late 900s-early 1000s England. The Middle Ages seems like the perfect place to escape to in October.
A book that crosses the centuries and interweaves magic. I was drawn in by the description: "With McLemore's signature lush prose, Dark and Deepest Red pairs the forbidding magic of a fairy tale with a modern story of passion and betrayal."
